Methylene Blue is one of the most commonly used dyes for microscopy. You can use it to stain transparent specimens to provide better contrast under the microscope. This chemical also has a number of other uses in chemistry and biology. It is used when conducting a MBAS (methylene blue active substances) assay, by combining a solution of methylene blue with chloroform to detect surface active agents.
Prepare the solution by combining 1ml of concentrated stain to 1 liter of distilled water. The staining reagent will be stable for several months if it is stored tightly capped in the refrigerator (and ensuring to label it properly to avoid anyone ingesting it).
